Every child deserves the proper education for them.
A number of people have wanted to know my thoughts about the current Special Education level for our board. This summarizes my collective responses.
My Response
I believe that the current three tiered service delivery model for Special Education is sound in its principles and underlying ideology. Built into the system is continuous assessment and planning for students throughout the education process. The OCDSB recognizes that learning abilities and needs must be identified as early as possible. The Board offers a range of programming to support student's needs and to help them achieve to their fullest potential. I think this latter point is the most germane; it is important that we are able to provide a range of solutions for children.
I believe that every student in all of our schools should be seen from a whole child perspective and that holds particularly true in the realm of Special Education. For individual education plans to be truly effective, there must be an adequate range of options to choose from and there must be adequate support and resources directed toward those options. I would actually like to see this whole child approach expanded such that cumulative student profiles exist for all students to track strengths and areas of need. This type input could prove a very efficient means for teachers to understand and accommodate individual differences in their classrooms.
